Villgro's mission focuses on harnessing the power of innovation and entrepreneurship to lift the marginalized from poverty and deprivation. Over the years, Villgro has demonstrated success in creating impact that is sustainable, scalable as well as replicable through its model of supporting early-stage social enterprises. It has also generated significant expertise in developing tested tools and methodologies to equip multiple stakeholders (incubators, entrepreneurs, donors) in this space. Villgro has 21 years of experience in incubating early-stage social enterprises and nurturing the social incubation ecosystem in India and globally. It has demonstrated success in creating impact at the Base of Pyramid by inspiring, funding, mentoring and supporting for-profit, innovation-driven enterprises in sectors such as Agribusiness, Healthcare, Renewable Energy and Education & Employability. Since its inception in 2001, Villgro has incubated 340 enterprises, provided $11 million in seed funding, enabled over $76 million in follow-on funding for these social enterprises - thereby created 4550+ new jobs and touched 20 million lives. Villgro has also incubated 84 women-led enterprises, disbursed over INR 163 million in seed funding and enabled INR 284 million in follow-on funding for them. Over the years, it has seen support from Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, The Technology Development Board, Department of Science & Technology-GoI, Rockefeller Foundation, The Lemelson Foundation, The Citi Foundation, Hindustan Unilever Foundation, BIRAC, INVEST INDIA, HDFC Bank, Accenture, giz, DFID, Mercedes-Benz, Daimler, RaboBank, DOEN Foundation, Ford Foundation, BCG, AWS etc. Villgro has also developed very strong on ground partnership with sector specific and result oriented organizations, some of which are CEEW, Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation, AVPN, ISBA, ANDE, Amani, NIAM, NAARM, IIT Kanpur, IIM Calcutta, Startup Oasis, Caspian, Upaya Social Ventures, Shell Foundation, Ikea Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Beyond Capital, NH Health City, Olam, UBS, and many more. It also works alongside Menterra, an affiliate & partner to address the challenge of access to funds and scale-up support for social enterprises. Menterra is a SEBI registered, category 1, venture capital fund. It started off as a seed/pre-series A investment fund of INR 730 million. The first fund has been invested and it is now in the process of raising the second fund with an aim to invest in enterprises which create an impact on the base of the pyramid segment. The Villgro-Menterra partnership has been a seamless conveyor belt of support in enabling enterprises to cross the ‘valley of death’. Visit the below link for more information - https://www.menterra.com/ Villgro India has a core team of about 23 fulltime and 7 parttime employees + the pool of mentor and technical experts. It uses a standard process for monitoring the effectiveness of incubation, that is also customizable at the enterprise level for various sectors and stages. It has also codified this process into an online tool - VITALS (Villgro Incubation Tracking and Learning System) that can be used by incubator ‘replicatees’ with a strong administrative module to track financial and accounting processes. Supporting the VITALS tool, is the Villgro ‘Replication Playbook’, available on an intranet, so incubator teams can enhance in-person training with offline learning and references. Villgro also uses this tool to collect and analyze incubation data, periodically produce thought leadership articles, how-to guides, templates and white papers to be used in guiding enterprises. This “Idea-to-Marketplace” knowledge-base serves as a repository of reference material for both incubators and incubatees. To bolster the incubation practice, the Villgro team is constantly involved in ecosystem building activities, like expert/thought-leadership talks at other incubators and growing networking platforms - like the ANDE (Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs) chapters in India, East Africa and South-East Asia. Villgro was ‘member organization of the year’ at ANDE conference 2019 - for its service to furthering ANDE’s mission. Recently Villgro has received the “Top Incubator Award” from the Startup India - Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India.
